Sutton Coldfield Under 16's got their season off to a flying start with a hard fought win against Silhillians, a side they had never beaten before. It was Sutton who came out of the blocks first with the forwards dominating play and giving the backs a solid platform to play off. Tom Foulds opened the scoring, crashing over from short range, with Tom Bishop adding the conversion. Kairo Dodd added a second spotting a gap in the defence off a lineout close to the Sils goalline. Silhillians hit back just before half time when deep in their own half they were awarded a free kick. Taken quickly by their centre, Sutton were caught asleep and he chipped over Sutton's defence, the ball bouncing kindly as he raced the length of the pitch to narrow the score to 12-5 at half time.
The second half saw Sils level things up after 15 minutes of hard fought rugby when their winger outpaced the defence to score under the posts. With the scores at 12-12 Sutton showed great heart and spirit and weren't going to be denied a first ever victory over their rivals. Niall Madden settled the match with an interception and raced half the pitch to score under the posts.
Sutton entertain Nuneaton U16's this Sunday in the first round of the Warwickshire Cup. Come on Green Army!
