Wells digs deep
Sutton U16's 20
Hinckley U16's 17
Sutton U16's won another epic encounter with current Leicestershire champions Hinckley on Sunday. The visitors were wanting revenge for the narrow loss to Sutton earlier in the season and their powerful forwards came flying out of the blocks from the start driving the ball deep into Sutton territory and were rewarded with the first score. Sutton responded and Clarke Wells levelled things up on 20 minutes scoring in the corner after some quick hands through the backs. Hinckley bounced back to retake the lead with a converted try but Sutton ended the half strongly and Adam Carey popped up out wide to score in the corner, the conversion hitting the post for Sutton to trail 12-10 at half time.
Hinckley scored first in the second half after a lineout on the 5 metre line to go 17-10 ahead but Sutton's superior fitness was the decisive factor. With Hinckley tiring Clarke Wells added his second to bring the score to within 2 points and with Sutton continuing to pile on the pressure it was centre Alex Quirke who scored the winning try, taking a crash ball and powering his way over with 5 minutes to go. Sutton's forwards saw out the game, keeping possession until the final whistle to secure the win.
