Sutton Coldfield U15s win on debut at Castle 7s

Craig Matthews26 Apr - 07:31

Resilient team performance secures victory against tough rivals

The Sutton Coldfield Under 15s played their first ever 7s tournament and walked away with the trophy at the brilliantly organised Castle 7s in Kenilworth.

Five teams stood between the lads and the silverware: Broadstreet, Silhillians, Kenilworth, Alcester and Camp Hill. None of them planned to make it easy.

The opening match against Kenilworth set the tone for the day. Sutton fell three scores behind and looked dead in the water. The lads chipped away, found their rhythm, and snatched the win in the dying seconds with the try and the conversion that mattered.

Alcester and Camp Hill followed, and both games went much the same way. Sutton dug in, kept their heads, and got over the line.

That set up back-to-back deciders against two strong sides in the competition. First, top of the table Broadstreet. The lads found another gear and beat them to lift the trophy. Then came Silhillians, who managed to prevent a tired but jubilant Sutton from finishing the day with a clean sheet.

Stand-out performances came from across the squad. In the backs: Noah Hennessy, Ozzy Ansa-Eno, Jackson Perry, Oscar Feltrup, Francis Delacroix, Thomas Hewston, Brandon Woolgrove and Louis Matthews. Up front in the forwards: Harrison Jones, Charlie Hoines, Jonny O'Sullivan, Jasper Hillier and Benedict Jones.

The team and coaches were also delighted to see Louis named Player of the Tournament and invited to trial for the National Sevens Academy.

Huge thanks to the organisers for putting on a brilliant event, and for giving the parents the chance to settle their nerves with a few cold beers!
