Sutton Coldfield Under 8s continued their superb form this season by winning the Lexus Regional tournament in Sandbach on Sunday.
Sutton took a number of M&J teams to the prestigious Lexus Regional tournament and all the teams performed well showing the strength of rugby in Sutton's mini and junior section however the highlight of the weekend was the U8's victory to win a coveted place in the National finals next May.
This was the U8’s third tournament in October- during which they have only lost one game. Having narrowly missed out on the final at the Moseley Mini Tournament (losing on try count-back) and then losing to a strong Bromsgrove side in the final at the Old Sills Festival by 5 tries to 4, the U8s went one better by lifting the trophy at the Regional stages of the Lexus tournament. They topped their group beating Rochdale, Stockport and a very stong Sandbach side on their way to the semi final. They then disposed of a fiery Shrewsbury team 6-4 by playing some very good counter attacking rugby to set up a tense encounter with Waterloo in the final.
Players and parent’s nerves were jangling when the team went behind 2-0 in the opening minute of the final but the team saved their best rugby for last and all the squad combined to produce some excellent attacking rugby and with a stand-out defensive performance from Alfie Kavanagh they eventually ran out winners 7-5. Waterloo were blown away by Sutton’s desire to win and some impressive phases of play. A number of impartial members of the crowd commented on the excellent support play and the lines of running rugby. It is safe to say that this squad will be one to watch for the future.
The squad included- Jed Benson, George Hale, Harvey Hughes, Alfie Kavanagh, Ben Mortimer, Louis Olivier, Harrison Roberts, Joseph Ryman and Lily Sperryn.
This win puts the squad into the Lexus National finals at Worcester Sixways next May.
This weekend’s performance by all Sutton teams demonstrates the strength of mini and junior rugby at Sutton. It's a great place for kids to enjoy the game of rugby whilst learning important life skills such as respect, discipline and team play. The club always welcomes new players, and their families, who want to learn how to play rugby in a friendly, relaxed and safe environment.
