The tone for the match was set early on, with Sutton’s backs spreading the ball wide before a fantastic kick and chase putting Salts in touch five metres from their own line. From there the forwards rounded the move off, driving their way over with a powerful maul allowing Richard Parfitt to touch down to complete a superb team try. After a fumble from the restart, allowed Salts to pin Sutton back in their own twenty two, but this only made what happened next all the more impressive. The lineout was secured again before winger Rhamel Blake cropped up at first receiver and took the defence on, beating his man on the outside before fighting off several scrambling chasers going almost the length of the field to score what would be the try of the match.
A short try drought followed, during which the over-eagerness of the green defence led to penalties for offside and hands in the ruck, which Salts were able to put over, bringing the score to 10-6. Eventually the tries began to roll in again, an attempted Salt’s clearance was charged down by the Sutton 9, before a strong charge from Adam Bennet teed up Dean Harper to score. Ewen Tweedie made an outside break, bursting through midfield to score the final try of the half. More Sutton indiscipline enabled Salts to score a third penalty leaving the score 20-9 at the end of the half.
Again it was Sutton who opened proceedings following half time, Dean Harper shoving off several defenders before reaching over for his second, this time Chris King converting the try. Minutes later, Sutton’s forwards were on the rampage again, with another driving maul in the Salt’s twenty two before Harper burst off the back to complete his hat-trick.
A short time later and the backs were back on the score sheet, this time through fly-half Alex Morgan, selling an outrageous dummy before tearing down the left flank to touch down in another solo effort, King was again successful in converting. Tweedie was next to touch down again, this time benefitting from another steamrolling run from Rhamel Blake, leaving several bodies in his wake down the wing before putting Tweedie away. Minutes later it was Blake’s turn to score again, a run almost identical to his input in the previous try this time allowing him to dot down between the posts for an easy conversion for King.
The game was rounded up with another solo effort from Tweedie, however a resulting row put a black mark on Sutton’s day as they were forced to see of the game with a man lost to the sin bin.
