Spartans 2nd's Secom to Dev Squad

Sutton hosted Spartans 2nd XV in the first round of the Warwickshire Cup on Saturday.

The first ten minutes were closely contested with both sides testing each other’s defences. There were handling errors on both sides with Sutton too eager to get on the score sheet and making some basic mistakes.

The stalemate was broken by no. 9 Tom Harris who darted over from loose play to open the scoring, converted by Ben Morgan. This was followed up by a good flowing move from Sutton with no 8 Stewart touching down with Morgan adding the extra two points.

Sutton then enjoyed more of the ball and right wing Matt Lawson went over for his first try of the afternoon with the rock steady Morgan adding the conversion.

Mike Burns added an unconverted try before Fleming outpaced the opposition on the left wing to run from half way and touch down under the posts, Morgan duly converted to end the first half with Sutton 33 – 0 Spartans.

Suttons defence stood firm through the second half and the pack pounced on every loose ball to allow the free scoring to continue.

Dave Roberts showed all his experience in touching down in the left corner closely followed by Lawson’s second try, both unconverted.

The pack were not to be denied getting on the score sheet in the second half and Nash made his presence felt and crashed over for the eighth Sutton try, with Morgan adding the extras.

Sutton added further scores through Joe Blacker (2), Lawson touched down for his hat trick try, Luke Fleming adding his second of the game, as did Dave Roberts. Morgan had an excellent afternoon with the boot with a total of 16 points from conversions.

Spartans played hard until the whistle with Sutton moving into the next round convincing 81 – 0 winners.
