The game started with the impression that scrums were to be uncontested as Lichfield were a front row member missing but Sutton chairman, birthday boy Jim Haywood responded in true coarse rugby style by reluctantly pulling on the Lichfield jersey and the game was on. Sutton scored almost immediately through Tom Foulsham's try and conversion and never looked back. In the blink of an eye it was 19-0 with a try from Vaughan Brown and someone else!!!!! Lichfield hit back, pouncing on a Sutton mistake to score from 10 metres out. However full service was resumed as Sutton ran in tries from all over the field in particular from Mark McEvoy,James Hegarty, Ian Wilson and Dave Smith. With regular conversions the score at half time was 43-12 in the visitors' favour.
The second half was a scrappy affair but still Sutton continued to inflict severe punishment on Lichfield with some outstanding tries. In a half of one way traffic Sutton were guilty of some severe over elaboration, in particular a certain Mr McEvoy who in a blatant piece of showboating failed to claim his hat trick of tries or the biggest crime of all failed to set up a team mate for a score!!!! Disgraceful!!!!!
Further tries for Sutton came through Smith, McEvoy and a fine individual try from Chris King who flicked up a stray pass with his foot grabbed it and proceeded to cut a swathe through Lichfield's defence in a 75 metre sprint for the line.
In the last 5 minutes Sutton really rubbed it in with further tries from Brandon(I hate Geordies and Mackems)Jones,Foulsham and Mark Baines who capped a fine afternoon of strong running with a well deserved try. The final score read 79-17to Sutton and the threes highest score for many a year.
