Sutton handed the league points on a plate to Bournville.

Sutton produced yet another Jekyll and Hyde performance in their penultimate league game of the season against Bournville on a very slopey pitch by Birmingham University. In a first half of unmitigating ineptitude from 1 to 15 Sutton found themselves 22-0 at half time as they seemed to have a non aggression pact with Bournville whereby they were allowed to stroll in for tries untouched by a green hand and when Sutton had the ball it was only momentarily as it was invariably dropped after about 2 passes!!! If the men in the green shirts had scored just one of the several created chances then they would have come away with the points. The only part of the first half that improved was the scrum where Stu McGarragle had a fine game standing in at hooker. Even that didn’t continue but more of that later!!
Half time came and went with a few choice words and a few replacements and phone box like Sutton were transformed into a kicking, snarling, attacking beast of a team that began to believe 22 points was a deficit that could be overhauled and it so nearly was! 22-0 became 22-7 as a converted Chris Duckworth try was a just reward for a 10 minute period camped in Bournville’s 22. But Sutton being Sutton the home team hit back with a real jelly of a try and the deficit was back to 22 as they scored and converted to make it 29-7. Sutton were still on top and powering through the scrums down the hill, that is until the Bournville hooker went off with a convenient(sic) knock and there being no front row replacement ( something the official took a very dim view of in the 10 minute pre game speech to the Sutton team) the scrums became uncontested!!! The hooker meanwhile spent the rest of the match running and leaping and shouting up and down the touchline!!!
Sutton scored again through Dean Mannion Quinn and Pete Hall both converted by Duckworth and the comeback was on at 29-21. Bournville were gifted a penalty which they took with alacrity to stretch their lead out to 11 points. Sutton bounced back after several more changes including replacing the author of this report who was in danger of self combustion! as Vaughan Brown scored again converted by Duckworth and the gap was 4 points with 15 minutes or so to go and then unbelievably Bournville were awarded and slotted their third penalty of the afternoon 35-28 but still with time to spare.
Sutton battered away at the Bournville line and were rewarded as Luis Piovesana finished off a fine move to touch down in the corner but unfortunately Duckworth pushed the conversion wide leaving the score at 35-33 with a few minutes remaining. A few chances came and went and Bournville were hanging on at the end and just nosed over the line.
So, not for the first time this season Sutton lost a game they should have won and won convincingly but until the basics are followed they will continue to be mid table team!
