Sutton hunted successfully for tries at Claverdon RFC

On an increasingly wild and windy Easter Saturday in South Warwickshire Sutton and Claverdon produced a festival of running rugby with the men in green coming out on top by the convincing score of 66-19.
Despite going behind to an early converted try, Sutton regrouped and proceeded to run in a succession of tries from all over the park overcoming a not inconsiderable slope in the process. 7-0 quickly became 7-21 with tries from Laurie Harries, Luke Hennessy(sacked from the front row union for running 40 metres uphill to score) and Tom Foulsham, all converted by Harries. A familiar Sutton brain fade then allowed Claverdon in for a try and 14-21 with about 20 minutes gone. The Sutton pack got on top and remained there for the remainder of the first half with Dave Smith, Tom Morahan and Hennessy punching holes in the Claverdon rearguard. Further tries from Ian Wilson and a fine solo effort(no surprise there) from Chev Taylor and oranges were taken at Claverdon 14 Sutton 33 with the prospect of 40 minutes running down the slope an enticing prospect.
The wind increased the rain started and Sutton started with a bang as Chris Duckworth ran in 2 tries from half way from the first 2 Claverdon restarts!! Duckworth completed his hattrick and 32nd try of the season in the first 5 minutes of the half. A bit of white line fever set in and a few try scoring opportunities were bombed but there was enough coherent play for Wilson and Taylor to both complete their brace of tries for the afternoon. Claverdon plugged away with the help of Scott Toy, who seems to enjoy his cameos for the opposition, scoring an unconverted try to make the final score Sutton 66 Claverdon 19.
A good game played in the right spirit and well reffed by the Claverdon first team captain with the named ref playing loose head for the home team. In the end Sutton’s power and pace proved too much for Claverdon and they did indeed provide a feast of running rugby.
