Under the guidance of head coach Joe Gavin and his deputy Sandy O'Hare, both pictured below with Joe to the right and Sandy to the left, the Sutton Colts, who were league champions last season continued their impressive winning ways into this season with a hard fought 26-22 victory at home to a Newport RFC Colts XV.
Following an impressive first half Sutton led 19-5 at the break, courtesy of 3 tries by Vinnie Prothero after 6 minutes, Harvey White after 13 minutes and Ryan Potter after 27 minutes, with Ben Edwards converting the second and third tries for the 19 Sutton points and Fin Barnes added a solitary try for the visitors, giving the hosts a comfortable lead...
But the Newport lads came storming back in the second half with 4 tries including a 7 point penalty try on 48 minutes, with the other tries coming from Fin Barnes again on 59 minutes and Charlie Stott on 69 minutes; however the day was saved for Sutton with a second try for Ryan Potter, converted by Ben Edwards to gave Sutton a good win and a vital try scoring bonus point.
The visitors left the Sutton Roger Smoldon Ground with their excellent work in the second half earning them 2 well deserved bonus points i.e. a try scoring bonus point for their 4 tries and a losing bonus point for losing by less than 7 points, as fair consolation for their efforts in a competitive second half.
