Sutton under 16s swiftly returned to winning ways after last weeks draw at Worcester with a resounding all round display against Malvern in the first round proper of the North Midlands Cup. In crisp and bright conditions perfect for rugby both teams started with lots of aggression and the first five minutes became a bruising encounter in the middle half of the pitch. But by the 6th minute it was Sutton who opened the scoring, winger Myles Bean finishing off a smart move to outsprint the Malvern defence down the left. Just five minutes later centre Jack Sanders jinked his way through a static Malvern defence to score under the posts. The green shirts continued to press forward and create a string of opportunities but the next score came from a mistake at the Malvern line out where an alert George Shepherd scooped up a loose ball and stormed through the fragile defence. Bean got in on the act again soon after with a lightening sprint down the left to cut in under the posts after good work from forwards Jonny Mills and Adam Lowe. The pack continued to dominate at the set pieces, setting up a string of opportunities for the backs and as confidence grew the whole team got in on the act to play some really enterprising rugby. One such move after half an hour saw winger Miles Gregory finish of a fine set up which involved some intricate interplay between the half back pairing of Ollie Chitnis and Ollie Hobin. But it was Malvern who finished the first half stronger and their own spell of pressure culminated in a sin binning for one of the home team forwards and from the subsequent penalty a score under the posts.
Starting the second half 35-7 to the good Sutton set about adding to their try tally but it took a further ten minutes before some excellent handling across the park saw Sanders set up his centre partner Jo Zaric who powered through to score left of the posts. With Chitnis stroking over a conversion from close to the touchline to add to his earlier tally of 5, Sutton continued to press and despite several personnel changes make a range of scoring opportunities. It was left to occasional winger Tom Edge to finish off the days points tally, blasting his way through the now tiring Malvern defence to score in the left corner.
After the match coach Ross McDonald said, “We were a pleasure to watch today. Just about everything clicked into place and we produced an excellent all-round performance with all parts of the side on top of their game. The challenge now is to keep performing to that standard!"
