Sutton’s under-16s stormed into their first ever North Midlands Cup Final with this magnificent but hard-earned victory away at Stourbridge. In a repeat of last year’s semi-final fixture, which Sutton lost through a last minute penalty, the green shirts were keen to make the most of a biting icy-wind at their backs in the first-half and were the dominant side in the opening exchanges. So it was no surprise that after 5 minutes it was Sutton who took the lead. Cold hands led to a series of handling errors and a passage of scrappy play was tidied up by winger Miles Gregory who went on a mazy run across to the right before timing a pass to right-winger Myles Bean to finish in the corner. Stourbridge responded with a number of penetrating attacks each repelled through some stubborn defence. Sutton continued to probe to create their own scoring opportunities and in the 15th minute they extended their lead. A powerful surge through the middle from centre Jack Sanders put the Stourbridge defence in disarray and another perfectly timed off-load gave Bean an opening to skip past two tackles and score under the posts. Despite the strong wind Paolo Parisi converted.
Stourbridge continued to work hard to find their own scoring opportunities but time and again the tackling from the Sutton forwards and backs alike stood firm. In the 20th minute however a lapse in concentration allowed Stourbridge to score a push over try in the right corner.
Showing relentless commitment back came Sutton with a flurry of attacks set in motion by the dominance of the pack at the set pieces. From one such scrum the ball was swiftly moved along the backs and out to winger Gregory to score with an excellent finish in the far corner. At the half time whistle Sutton held a 17-7 advantage.
With the wind and occasional snow flurry in their faces Sutton had to work even harder in the early stages of the second half to keep Stourbridge at bay. Time and again Sutton closed ranks to drive back the hosts with some decisive tackling and intelligent rugby. And in the 20th minute of the second period fly half Oliver Chitnis rode three tackles in the centre of the park before sprinting clear to score under the posts, Parisi adding the conversion points. To their credit Stourbridge continued to attack but the Sutton defence held firm to retain a clean sheet in the second half and at the final whistle the green shirts proved worthy and comfortable winners. Coach Ross McDonald commented “I am delighted for the boys who are getting the reward for their hard work throughout the season”. Sutton now look forward to the cup final in two weeks time.
