Alex saves the day

Sutton u15s picked up where they left off at the end of the 2017/18 season when they faced Silhillians RFC on Sunday morning at their ground in Copt Heath. Silhillians won the u14 Warwickshire Cup last season, having beaten Sutton in a hard fought game in the qualifying rounds. As a result, Sutton were determined to get an improved result in their first game as an u15 side. With a couple of new players having joined over the summer there was a degree of optimism in the side, following some very positive training sessions at the start of the season.
The game started at a ferocious pace, with both sides running and tackling very hard. After 15 minutes of a game that flowed backwards and forwards, Sils managed to score the first try, going over by the posts, making the conversion straightforward and giving them a 7-0 lead. Sutton then exerted a period of sustained pressure on the Sils tryline, which finally resulted in Henry Nevitt scoring near the posts. Henry then converted his own try to bring the scores back level at 7-7.
Both sides made changes at half-time, but it was Sutton who started the second half the stronger, putting the Sils team under immense pressure before Matt Goodwin scored in the corner. Henry Nevitt was off-target with the very difficult conversion from close to the touchline, so that the score moved on to 7-12.
The game continued at the same pace for the rest of the second half, with both sides creating chances to score further tries. However, it took a try-saving tackle from Alex Moore on the Sils centre towards the end of the half to stop a further score which would have given Sils the game. As a result, Sutton were able to close out the game to earn a famous victory over one of the best teams in the area!
Every one of the lads played fantastically well, allowing the coaches to rotate the squad and try out new positional options. Both Jimmy Hollis and King-Jerry Adu made strong debuts for the team. This all bodes very well for a good season, which continues with the first round of the Warwickshire Cup against Stratford-upin-Avon next Sunday.
