Back to winning ways

North Warwickshire Barbarians RFC u15s v Sutton Coldfield RFC u15s

Sutton u15s returned to winning ways after the disappointment of defeat in the first pool game in the Warwickshire Cup last weekend, when they visited Nuneaton Old Edwardians ground to play North Warwickshire Barbarians RFC, a composite of players from Nuneaton Old Edwardians RFC and Keresely RFC.
A near full squad from Sutton saw 18 players available to play against a very large Barbarians side. Sutton took control of the game from the very start and soon put King-Jerry Adu over for the first try under the posts, his first competitive try for the team. Matt Smith converted. Soon after, Jacob Westwood broke though the Barbarians defence to score Sutton’s second try, again converted by Matt Smith, who then ran through to score a try of his own, which he was unable to convert from the left of the posts. Owen Notley then ran a great line to return the kick-off back under the posts to make Matt Smith’s conversion straightforward. At the end of the first half, a rolling maul from a lineout saw the Sutton pack drive Jimmy Hollis over in the corner for his first try for the team. Half time saw the score at 0-31 to Sutton.
Having made some changes at half-time, Sutton kept up the momentum in the second half. Matt Goodwin, playing at centre rather than in the pack, powered over to score another try, again converted by Matt Smith from in front of the posts. Smith then provided a perfectly weighted cross-field kick into the corner for Alex Moore to run onto and score Sutton’s seventh try in the corner. Unfortunately Matt Smith was unable to convert this opportunity. North Warwickshire defended strongly in the second half and made good use of their big forwards to keep Sutton pegged back at times. In the final minutes of the game, Archie Grimshaw ran a great line onto a pass and was able to score the final try under the posts, converted again by Matt Smith.
Final score 0-50 to Sutton, giving the team an excellent opportunity to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Cup competition when they play the final pool game against Pinley RFC in November. All of the boys played really well in this match, with the forwards matching their bigger opponents in both the tight and the loose, giving Sutton’s backs the chance to run some great lines.
