Burntwood RFC u15s v Sutton Coldfield RFC u15s

Sutton u15s continued their winning run with a 5-55 win against Burntwood RFC, a team that had beaten Sutton in two very close games home and away last season. The score line did not really reflect the game, with Sutton spending long periods in defence. However, their greater discipline and structured play made the difference between the two sides.
Sutton took control of the game from the very start with a couple of strong drives, but had to wait till the 10th minute to score their first try, Alex Moore running on to a through kick from Matt Smith and touching down his own flyhack to score in the corner. Henry Nevitt was off target with the tricky conversion from far out. Sutton’s second try came from a drive at the front of a line out on the Burntwood 5m line, with Matt Goodwin scoring in the opposite corner. Henry Nevitt was successful with this conversion kick. Steady Sutton pressure then brought their third try of the half, with Oliver Hill driving over from close range after a series of pick and drives, for his first try for the club. The conversion was missed again. However, Henry Nevitt was able to convert Sutton’s final try of the first half, scored by King-Jerry Adu close the posts, finishing off further sustained pressure from both forwards and backs. Half time score: Burntwood RFC 0; Sutton Coldfield RFC 24.
Having made some changes at half-time, Sutton kept up the momentum in the second half. Matt Goodwin powered over to score another try, again converted by Henry Nevitt from in front of the posts. Owen Notley then scored the try of the game, finishing a sweeping team move started on Sutton’s own 22 yard line with a short drop out from Matt Smith, with the ball passing through several pairs of hands before Owen scored the try unopposed at the other end of the pitch, although it did go unconverted. Burntwood were then able to make their own period of pressure count, scoring a try through their forwards, despite controlled defence from Sutton. This try also went unconverted, taking the score to 5-36 to Sutton.
Any thoughts of a Burntwood come back were short-lived as Alex Moore went over for his second try straight from the kick-off, which Henry Nevitt converted. Matt Goodwin completed his hat-trick with a solo try, running in from the Burntwood 22 yard line, bursting several tackles on the way. This was not converted. Sustained Sutton pressure saw a series of scrums on the Burntwood 5m line, which had to be reset several times as Burntwood exerted strong defensive pressure. However, Sutton were finally able to complete the scoring, with James Taylor catching a bouncing cross-field kick from Matt Smith the score in the corner. Again Henry Nevitt converted, taking the final score to 5-55 in favour of Sutton.
A strong team performance, with all players making good yards and defending strongly against a physical Burntwood side, bodes well for the next game against Pinley in the Warwickshire Cupp in a fortnight’s time. A victory at home in this game would see Sutton though to the knock-off stages of the Cup competition for the first time.
