A great game

Nuneaton RFC u15s v Sutton Coldfield RFC u15s

Sutton u15s visited Nuneaton to try to continue their recent winning run against a long-standing opponent. Nuneaton would present a much tougher challenge than the previous rounds of matches, as they were also in the quarter finals of the Warwickshire Cup, alongside Sutton. Sutton could only muster 13 players, due to a combination of prior commitments, injury and illness, so they started the game with the loan of two players from Nuneaton.
Sutton once again took control of the game from the very start by catching Nuneaton’s kick-off and returning it back up the field through a series of passes. Finally James Taylor was released on the left wing and stood his opposite number up beautifully before accelerating around him to score in the corner. Matt Smith was off target with the tricky conversion from far out. The rest of the first half saw play alternate back and forth along the length of the pitch. Nuneaton made good progress through big drives from their forwards and Sutton made use of their pace and handling to move the ball wide and use the space to make yards. The only other score of the half came from Nuneaton who scored through one of their forwards in the corner. An excellent conversion went over off the upright to give the home side a narrow lead. Half time score: Nuneaton RFC 7; Sutton Coldfield RFC 5.
The second half started in exactly the same fashion, with the two Nuneaton “loanees” being swapped over at halt-time. Sutton built pressure through several phases of play, before King-Jerry Adu was able to step back against the run of play to score under the posts. Matt Smith converted to give the lead back to Sutton again. Matt then extended the lead further when he dived over off the back of a ruck to score in the very corner, but was unable to convert his score from on the touchline. Back came Nuneaton with another series of drives through their forwards and their centre to score on the left wing, which was again impressively converted by the fly-half who was taking over the kicking duties for the first time this season. Unfortunately for the home side, he was off-target for the first time in the game a few minutes later when he pulled a penalty kick wide of the posts, leaving the score at 14 – 17 with 10 minutes to play.
Matt Smith then thought that he had scored following a break from the half way line, but it was ruled out for a knock-on in the act of scoring, under pressure from a couple of Nuneaton tacklers. Not to be outdone, Matt then scored under the posts from a similar break and was able to convert, taking the score to 14-24 in Sutton’s favour. Nuneaton then managed a late score through their centre, who had made several strong breaks during the game and this was again converted. A tense last 2 minutes saw Sutton turn the ball over following the restart and secure possession until the referee decided that the game was over and the ball was kicked out of play. Final score: Nuneaton RFC 21; Sutton Coldfield RFC 24.
A fantastic game of rugby between two very well matched sides, played in the true spirit of the game. It was also evidence of how far the Sutton team have progressed this season in that they were able to close out the game following Nuneaton’s late score – in previous years they may well have folded at that and conceded a further score but not now. The return of the missing players next week will bolster the side as they travel to Leicester to paly Vipers RFC for the first tim
