SCRFC u16s got their season off to a great start with a comprehensive home win over Derby RFC. An early penalty kick from Matt Smith was followed by first half tries from Archie Grimshaw and Matt Smith both converted by Henry Nevitt, to give the home team a 17 – 0 advantage at half time. This was probably not fully reflective of the pressure that Sutton exerted, having the vast majority of possession and territory.
Following six changes at half time, the scoring continued apace. An early try from Owen Notley went unconverted, Henry Nevitt’s only miss of the day. However, further tries from Archie Grimshaw and King-Jerry Adu were converted to give Sutton a 36 – 0 advantage before Derby managed to get on the score sheet via their centre. This was also converted to make the score 36 – 7. Sutton responded immediately through a James Taylor try, converted by Henry Nevitt before Derby scored their second try through their prop. The conversion made it 43 – 14. Further Sutton tries from Matt Smith and Joe Dean were also converted to make the final score 57 – 14.
Sutton had 4 players making their debuts and were able to give the whole team good game time before next week’s away fixture at local rivals Bournville.
