A tough start to season

Match report – Warwickshire Cup Round 1 1st October 2017
Sutton u14s went to Broadstreet to play the rescheduled first round match in the Warwickshire Cup this Sunday. After conceding an early try, Sutton then came right back in to the game and the game remained tight until Broadstreet scored a second try right on half time. At the start of the second half, Sutton went on the offensive and scored a try through Joe Dean. The game became very tightly contested as Broadstreet gave away a number of penalties to allow Sutton to maintain some pressure. However, they then broke away to score a couple of tries before Sutton scored one of their own through Matt Smith, which he then converted. However, Broadstreet had the final score to run out winners by 27 points to 12.
This was a much improved performance which saw Sutton contest the game with a very combative Broadstreet side.
Sutton then had a short game with Burton, who had also turned up at the ground in Coventry expecting to play Broadstreet. It was agreed that Burton would play a game of two halves against both Sutton and Broadstreet. The match with Sutton was very tightly contested, with the fresh-legs of Burton eventually winning by one try to nil for a 5 point margin. Sutton took the advantage of this additional game to give a full run-out to the whole squad of 18 who had turned up for the morning.
Positives were the level of aggression and commitment shown at the breakdowns, which were significantly higher than in last week’s game against Berkswell and Balsall. Next week sees the team return to Sutton to face Droitwich in a friendly game. It will be good to see how they are able to bring the commitment levels seen in today’s games into the match with a side that have traditionally been very strong.
