Save the best till last

Just like a number of other teams this year, the Under 14s saved their best rugby of the season til the last game.
They traveled to the mighty Walsall with the memory of previous defeats in the backs of their minds.
The opening 10 minutes were an onslaught from the reds but very disciplined and organised defence kept the hosts at bay until a slick blind side move outwitted the tiring defence. Unlike other times this season the Sutton boys kept their composure and got on with the task at hand.
A line out to the front and quick turn of pace from Matt Goodwin produced a ruck metres short, only for prop Jamie Skelton to pick up and drive over for his first try in green in this, his first season.
The remainder of the first half was a war of attrition with both sides defending like Trojans with only a Henry Nevitt penalty edging the scores 8-5 in Sutton’s favour on the turn.
Sutton continued playing measured and assured Rugby in the second period and were rewarded with a score down the left for No. 8 Joseph Dean. Changes were made to give opportunities to all the squad but the pressure did not let up. A cheeky chip and go by Matt Smith was collected by him to give try number three and the boys had a bit of breathing room.
Back came Walsall and Sutton’s defence managed to hold 3 up over the line. Tremendous scrummaging by a new pack line up turned over ball and pressure was relieved. From subsequent phases, Jacob Westwood took the ball deep from the line and made a blistering 50 yard run to score under the posts. A simple conversion for Nevitt.
Brave defending at the death saw Matt Goodwin, a solid performer this year, knocked out. With time running out Joseph Dean drove down the left wing again, broke 2 tackles to score in the corner with the last play.
