Coracles were the preferred transport as Sunday morning saw Burton host Sutton deep in the Trent everglades.

After four frustrating weeks of bad weather, Sutton 'A' finally managed to play a competitive game. The river Trent raced passed the only pitch on the flood plain to survive the most recent down pour, threatening to spill over its banks.

From the whistle both teams made it clear they meant business, Sutton received and ran back at the home side. Big tackles rained in from both sets of forwards with bone crunching regularity, causing knock-on's and misplaced passes by both teams.

Despite Sutton's domination of the ball, constant indiscipline and petty infringements made sure Burton stayed in the game. Mid-way through the half the first meaningful series of phases culminated in Sam Grimshaw breaking down the left side to score in the corner to give the visitors the lead. This sparked Sutton into life, their trademark game beginning to come through. Harry Mitcham directed the forwards masterfully, Billy Tudor carried on from last weeks development team game working well with front row regulars Hugh Mcmenamin and Ben McElhanlon. New second row pairing Luke Reynolds and debutant Lewis Belton started to bully the opposition in the loose and giving strong support to pack leader Louis Hanlan at the break down.

Sutton's second try came on the stroke of half time as Luke burst through and charged over the line after some persistent backs play through the center of the pitch.

The second half saw Sutton dominating play despite giving away frequent penalties, set pieces were a constant source of success with Sutton's pack driving through Burton in the scrum. Another three well crafted tries made the score more respectable, Ben Mac driving over from close in, Harry danced through the Burton back line after some good work by Cormac Neville and a fine debut try for Lewis made it a final score of 25-0.

Of the nine fixtures scheduled for the first half of the season only five were played - four away and one at home, all won comfortably. A great way to finish the year. Merry Christmas to all and bring on the New year for more rugby success.
