The changeable weekend weather greeted both teams with a biting wind blowing across the RSG.

With seven lads (five of the pack) away on County duty Sutton were forced to play several lads out of position. This said, a sterling performance was witnessed with stand in loose-head prop Michael Salway acquitting himself to the coal face more than adequately, giving little quarter to the larger, more experienced Lichfield front row.

Settling into their unfamiliar positions the Sutton lads began to play well, hooker Matty Morris regularly turning over ball in the scrum and the back lines rush defence kept the pressure on the visitors forcing a panicked opposition into a series of poor passes and knock-on’s.

On six minutes, first blood was drawn by Lichfield with a break down the right and a score in the corner the two points added with a tremendous effort from the touch line, 0-7.

A head injury to scrum half Dan Khan forced a change with George Creed going to 9 and Jake Preece coming in at fullback. The constant to and fro rhythm to the game saw good attacking play thwarted by equally good defence from both teams.

A strong Sutton scrum in the Lichfield 22 resulted in some good ball being passed down the line to Jake who had forced the overlap to go in at the corner for a well deserved try, the conversion was missed leaving the half-time score 5-7 to the visitors.

The second half continued in the same manner as the first, with thrust and counter thrust being nullified by strong defence. Sutton thought they had taken the lead through Alasdair Bell, but alas, he was adjudged to have been held up over the line. Undeterred Sutton pressed the Lichfield defensive line.

More injuries saw open-side Rob Hollinghurst swap with Matty and Cormac Neville join No.8 Bradley Sprague and blind-side terrier Jenson Sharlott in the back row. Pocket rocket Nathan Case went to outside centre and Callum Aherne shifted to inside centre. A well worked move saw stand in scrum half George Creed go over for a well earned try to make it 10-7 to the home team.

The forced changes threw the lads into more unfamiliar territory and with Lichfield smelling blood they went for the win. A break through a gap in the line saw the opposition score a second try right at the death to make the score 10-12 at the final whistle.

An excellent performance by Sutton, under difficult circumstance, deserved more from the game!
All the lads should be extremely proud of their individual and team performances considering most were playing out of position.
