A beautiful autumn morning graced the Sils tournament on Sunday, Sutton RFC mini & junior section joined several other teams from Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire to compete for the festival honours.

Game 1: Sutton 12's (Mr. Hyde) started poorly, with unforced errors in both attack and defence. A Louis Hanlan try half way through the first half saw a Sutton win as 12's scraped past Lichfield 5 - 0 in a game best forgotten for both teams.

Game 2: A much improved performance saw Sutton (Dr. Jekyll), who exhibited flashes of the form they produced last weekend, run out 20 - 5 against the host’s, Louis hanlan and Jenson Sharlott scoring one each whilst Reagan Cartwright scored a brace to seal the win the second of his two, a fine example of fowards and backs interplay. One negative was the poor tackling that allowed the Sils to score.

Game 3: The deciding game of the Pool stages begun with an injury to Louis Hanlan, treatment was given to both Louis and the Bees player who had clashed heads right from the kick off. The festival rules stated that no injury time or extra time was to be played so the game restarted at the start of the second half. Bees settled quicker running in three unanswered tries through some very sloppy defending (Mr. Hyde) to seal their place as pool winners and face Bromsgrove in one semi final. Sutton finished runners up, the prize.....a semi final against Worcester.

As expected Worcester came out all guns blazing, but Sutton (Dr. Jekyll) held firm with exceptional defensive work by winger Jenson Sharlott and second row Cormac Neville in particular. Two well worked Worcester tries were countered with a interception try by Captain Sam Grimshaw. The second half saw resolute defending and some inspired attacking by Sutton; it was all to no avail as Worcester run in a third near the end. A good performance showing grit and determination helped to raise the spirits a little, but the spectre of poor handling and lack of focus still hung around in the shadows as we trudged home.

Another year finishing semi final bridesmaids along with Bromsgrove!

Maybe next year on the full size pitch we may be victorious?

Worcester won the final 2 tries to 1 against B’ham Bees.
