500 years after the war of the roses ended, a game starved team of warriors wearing the emblem of Henry Tudor visited Market Harborough to commence battle in a three way competition along with Long Buckby.

After a communication breakdown of the highest order, Sutton U12’s finally set up camp ready to play a host team who like them hadn’t lost during the 2012/13 season. With no warm up the battle lines were drawn and the game commenced and after some hard hitting forward play by both packs the ball made its way to the Sutton backs via scrum half harry Mitcham. A powerful arcing run by Sam Grimshaw resulted in first blood being drawn. Market Harborough restarted and immediately put Sutton under pressure; strong running, hard tackling and some strange refereeing decisions saw Mkt. Harborough remain camped on the Sutton 5 metre line for the majority of the first half. Dogged defence by the whole Sutton team ensured the half time score remained 0-5 to the visitors.
A well drilled home side seemed to have the edge over a rusty Sutton when a well place kick out of defence gave Harborough the upper hand with a penalty, given for not releasing, five metres from the Sutton line, a couple of minutes into the second half, the result...the equalising try. With their tails up and some more questionable decisions the hosts began to turn the screw as they could taste victory, after a prolonged stint of pressure Sutton eventually managed to break out of their own half with some determined driving by the forwards, after being thwarted just short of the line Sam finally score his second of the day from a well worked move involving forwards and backs.
After some typically heroic play, Jenson Sharlott fell to a bloody nose, the result of a massive defensive tackle on a forward twice his size, Jake Preece coming on as a substitute for the duration of the second half.
With only a few minutes left, the hosts increased the pressure looking for the equaliser, Sutton defending manfully with Harry Mitcham leading the way. Time and time again, wave after wave of Harborough attacks were repelled by a stubborn Sutton defence, the pressure compounded by a series of several unfathomable penalties keeping the play on the Sutton line. Despite everything thrown at them the whistle final sounded to end the game, the final score 5-10 to the Tudor Rose of Sutton Coldfield.
To everyone who wasn’t there, this was a first class exhibition of excellent attack play by the hosts countered and ultimately beaten by exceptional defending and break away rugby from the visitors.
This game will go down in the annuls of the history of this group of players as one of their best performances against a very good and capable opponent.
For his endeavour behind the pack at the breakdown and set pieces and his determined never say die leadership in defending his line Harry Mitcham was named Man of the Match, a feat in itself as every player would have been a worthy recipient of the title.
