The 500 points milestone was reached today in another hard fought win against local rivals Lichfield.

As the bright blue sky and sunshine gave way to the all too familiar cold, grey overcast weather of the past few weeks, Sutton faced up to do battle with local rivals Lichfield.

The visitors kicked off and set about disrupting the Sutton attack from the start. Big tackles rained in from both sides, forwards and backs alike, the intensity unrelenting as the play was condensed in the middle third of the pitch.

After a series of turnover balls for each team the home teams first try came from the back of a Sutton ruck, Harry Mitcham digging the ball out and spinning it out to the wing where Callum Aherne, running a great line, burst on to the ball at full speed breaking through the Lichfield back line to score in the corner. Harry converted to make it 7-0.

From the restart Harry caught the ball and launched it over the on rushing visitor's and Callum again running on to the bouncing ball and charge in for his second of the day and 13th for the season. The conversion was missed by man of the match Sam Grimshaw, the score 12-0 with a long way still to go to the half-time whistle.

Some good rugby by both teams meant the play was again concentrated within the middle third of the pitch with break and counter break cancelled out by great defensive plays. Sutton began to heap the pressure on the visitors as the half began to draw to a close, the constant battering of the forwards taking its toll when Lichfield conceded a penalty 15 meters from their line.

The result saw Luke Reynolds take the ball in sucking in Lichfield's big lads, he passed to Callum who offloaded to Hugh McMenamin who in turn freed Sam with a beautiful pass out of the tackle, to run in the third try of the game, George Creed popped the ball over for the extras making the score 19-0 to the hosts at half time.

The second half started with Sutton kicking off up the slight gradient, Lichfield returned the ball with interest into the heart of the home sides territory, strong defence made sure they ventured no further the usual suspects Cormac Neville, Hugh McMenamin, Ben McElhanlon, Tyler Bryant and Jenson Sharllot digging in and doing the dirty work. Half time substitute Jake Preece also put in some good hits on the wing to stop the visitors progressing any further.

Strong running No.8 Luke, peeled off the back of a scrum to recieve the ball from Harry and charge through taking a couple with him on the way, Harry dropped the two increasing the gap to 26-0 to Sutton. With their confidence increasing as the game went on Sutton began to turn the screw, wave after wave of pressure saw the pack win their fair share of the visitors set pieces even with the scrum half feeding.

Suttons strength turned over a Lichfield scrum, 10 meters out and Harry found his target with usual accuracy, fly half George Creed passed to Cormac who drew the defence to the corner leaving a nice gap for Sam to pop through to score his second of the day. The conversion was missed, 31-0.

Into the last five minutes Suttons intensity increased again making it hard for the Lichfield lads to create any meaningful attacks, another turnover scrum resulted in a ruck just over the gain line. Luke dropped into the pocket and recieved the ball on the full, galloping in to score his second and with Harry converting and the score ticked over to 38-0.

A lapse of concentration at a Lichfield lineout 20 meters out saw the visitors claim a consolation converted try. The score at the final whistle 38-7, a well deserved win, from a very hard fought contest.

As the dust settled, the scars of battle became visible - Ben Mac sporting a lovely black eye; rewards for all his hard work in the scrum and at the breakdown and the remnants of a bloody nose gained in the penultimate play of the game was evident down the front of Lukes shirt and shorts.

A typically competitive game made for a very enjoyable spectacle, both sets of players leaving everything on the pitch. Well done to Sutton for their committed play and also to Lichfield who never gave up; playing as hard at the finish as they did at the start.
