Autumn changed to winter this weekend. A very blustery Sunday saw Sutton travel south to Shirley hosted by Edwardians, Mitch agreeing to referee the games.

Game one saw Sutton ‘A’ continue from last week, dominating the game from the kick off. A somewhat confused opposition was made to pay for numerous infringements around the breakdown giving Harry the opportunity to tap and go on the majority of the penalties awarded. This quick thinking gave rise to many gaps being taken advantage of by Sam who thoroughly enjoyed himself scoring another hat-trick of tries (finishing with 4). As the pack wreaked havoc up front so did the back line run riot from set plays and in the open. The final whistle saw the away team run in 10 unanswered tries (converting 6) finishing 62-0 winners.

Game two saw the replacements again take on the confidence of the first game performance and continue to dominate play through a very awkward and scruffy game. Again penalties were the order of the day as the home team persisted with coming in from the side, playing the ball on the floor and generally disrupting the flow of the game, compounding the frustration of the ref and players alike. A final score line of 22-0 belied the dominance of Sutton ‘B’s dominance of the game, the highlight was Sam coming on as a second half sub to score another hat trick.

A fantastic personal scoring performance from Sam saw him rack up a total of 7 tries over the two games. Captain Harry Mitchum controlled game one with ease, and Dan, his replacement for game two followed suit building a good partnership with Callum at fly-half.

A mixture of different laws played by Edwardians during the season to date had left the boys and coaching staff confused and unaware of the new aspects of the game open to them at this age level. We wish them and their new coach the best for the rest of the season.

A game to forget, the call for better opposition from both players and parents was made over the post match pints. We look forward to our next game - away to our Staffordshire rivals Lichfield.
