Conditions could not have been any more different from last week, rain bucketed down snow threatened to join in and the temperature started at 3.0 C and barely got any higher, in fact, it seemed to get colder.

Taking all these things into consideration the coaches from both teams decided on one game instead of the usual two, an instruction to keep it close seemed to be the sensible way forward and so it begun. All anticipation of a good hard game of rugby between two good teams washed away with the deluge.

From the kick off Sutton knocked on, cold hands the culprit. Scrum down five metres away from the Sutton line meant pressure was on from the word go. After feeding the first, the ball coming straight out on the second and Sutton seemed to take the initiative and with a combined big push Sutts turned the ball over. Good handling kept the ball going forward, a break from the back of a ruck took it over the gain line down to 5 metres from the Sils line, and Hugh picked and went diving over for the first try.

Both Cormac and Callum sensibly gave in to illness and were substituted, Matthew for Callum and Jake for Cormac.

From the restart Sutton were straight back at Sills through Sam who made good ground before being bought down setting up a ruck. This was to be the format for the rest of the half with Luke carrying on from last week driving forward and continually setting up maul and ruck, resulting in both Tyler and Louis going over for tries 2 and 3.

As the weather continued to batter players and spectators Sutton began to control the game more and more with the pack adapting to the atrocious conditions, two more tries followed good work from Luke and Harry, who by this time was blue with cold. Harry set Luke on his way to two barnstorming runs, defenders bouncing off him as he drove over twice to make the score 27-0 with time still left on the clock. Sam went over for his first try of the day making a personal tally of 100 points for the season and the half time score 32-0.

Half time was swift with only enough time to make the changes, Harry Kicked off and with great effect the Sils Captain made a telling break straight through the middle of the Sutton defence, charging three quarters of the pitch to score a stunning solo try which he converted himself.

This sparked Sutton back into action with Louis, Tyler, Hugh, Connor and Luke all taking turns in picking, driving and setting the ball up for the backs to drive over for another try through Sam. Old Sils retaliated with another two tries of their own before more good close quarter work by the pack enabled Luke to take on the Sils back line bulldozing his way to another try this time converting it himself, his first hat trick since the first day of the season. By now the weather was taking its toll on the players - knocks not normally felt until the following day being compounded by the driving rain and cold. Two players who didn’t seem to feel it were the two big lads from either side, continuing to battle it out in the loose and at set pieces, the winner of the contest, with the help of Harry and co. was Luke who, finished off the scoring when he once again picked up from the back of a maul and let loose sending one unfortunate Sils player backward several feet as he hammered home his fourth and the teams ninth try of the day. The score at the final whistle was 51-19, another superb team performance in very difficult conditions, Sutton seeming to cope better than Old Sils with the unruly conditions.

May I congratulate everyone concerned with the mini and midi section for all their efforts and support given to the kids from all the teams through this tortuous morning, moreover, well done to the players from both clubs who braved the stinging rain and biting wind to carry on regardless and perform in such horrible conditions.
