Fresh from their exploits at the Market Harborough Tournament where they reached the final, Sutton U11’s played host to a Moseley side, who had competed well in the reverse fixture back in October.

Mother Nature tormented everyone for the second home game on the trot, snow falling heavily as we set off at 09:15 but mercifully clearing to give us near perfect rugby conditions by kick-off.

As expected Moseley turned up with a strong ‘A’ squad with some big lads in the pack and speedy backs, Sutton ‘A’ were forced to play with the slope first half, Moseley kicking off to start the game. Both sides were showing their intent to attack with some good runs providing an exciting start to the game. A series of scrums and rucks set up a sound base for Sutton to put pressure on the Moseley try line, Harry directing his pack to pick and drive with Hugh diving over to open the scoring as he had done against Sils. Harry duly converted the try to make the score 7-0.

From the restart Moseley put pressure on Sutton’s pack, working hard in the break down to disrupt any quick ball. Sutton finally found their feet and began to take control again winning clean ball and spreading the ball to both wings resulting in Jenson and Elliot Needle making good ground with strong ambitious runs. Some good interchange play between backs and forwards saw Sam and Luke making a number of their customary runs at the defence, Sam drawing players into the tackle, Luke spraying Moseley players across the ground. With Louis missing and Luke tied up stemming the Moseley tide in the rucks and mauls, Tyler, representing the second row, took his chance bursting down the Sutton right racing three quarters of the pitch to score a tremendous second try for Sutton, George C converting to make it 14-7 at the break.

The second half began as the first had finished both teams competing strongly at the break down and using the ball wisely in the loose. A series of Moseley infringements, including several high tackles, resulted in Sutton heaping the pressure on through a number of phases, Harry and Luke starting to control the back of the ruck. Even with all of Sutton’s possession, a determined and resolute Moseley defence meant that the score stayed at 14-0 for most of the second half, despite the best efforts of Elliot who peppered the oppositions try line only to be stopped just short or, in one instance, held up by the Moseley pack. With very few Moseley attacks reaching the Sutton touch line the result was confirmed through a solo try by Harry, breaking from the back of a ruck, jinking his way along the right to score in the corner, Cormac duly scored the conversion to make the score 21-0 with only a couple of minutes remaining. A determined fight back saw Moseley drive hard toward the Sutton line providing a tense finish to the game, Sutton closed the game down with some tough defensive work right to the end, the final score 21-0.

Both teams received a well deserved round of applause from the watching support; some very good, hard fought rugby was exhibited by the lads. Suttons more direct play and clinical finishing being the decisive factor.

Match 2 saw a relatively new and inexperienced ‘B’ side take to the field. Now was their time!

Still with the majority of the first XII on the pitch Moseley took charge, pressuring the Sutton pack from the start. Matty, playing hooker for the first time, performed manfully winning ball in the scrum disrupting ball in the contact and tackling hard in the open. With five minutes gone Sutton won quick ball from a maul, the ball spinning out to Kai on the over lap, who charged his way through some weak tackling to score his first ever try in the corner, an expression of surprise and elation beamed across his face. Sam converted to make the score 7-0. Dan worked industriously behind the pack his reward was a try from 15 metres out darting through a gap from round the side of a ruck, Connor converted to make it 14-0.

As with the first game Moseley came back strongly from the restart. A scrappy game ensued with penalties and knock-ons the order of the half, some good work by Moseley saw them score a converted try before the break to make the score 14-7 to the hosts. The second half saw a couple of changes – Harry at fly half for George C, Luke at tight-head for Hugh and Cormac at inside centre for Sam. Moseley started the second as they finished first, piling on the pressure with Sutton defending strongly. Dan, Shane, Jack, Jake and new boy Elliot Mills all putting in a great shift in defence and attack, as the second half progressed the Sutton back line began to exploit the gaps more and more, each time being thwarted by Moseley’s determined defence.
Moseley made several good breaks resulting in some dynamic defence from Sutton, but the pressure finally told and Moseley ran in two tries late in the half, one converted, to make the final score 19-14 to the visitors.

A hard fought win for Moseley didn’t detract from the fantastic performance put in by Sutton ‘B’, who against the odds, competed toe to toe with a very good side pushing them all the way to the final whistle. All the lads can be very proud of the way they played and conducted themselves, the score reflecting how well they all performed.
