Up and at 'em

On Sunday 8th October Sutton Coldfield Under 10's traveled over to Silhillians Rugby Club for the annual Sils Rugby Tournament. This was only our 2nd competitive run out of the season under the new RFU Under 10's Age Grade rules - having added rucking, scrummaging and mauling to our game.

This had meant that we had a busy 4 - 5 weeks training period learning the new techniques and understanding when to make key decisions in the game.

Sutton mixed the squad up and took 2 competitive teams over to Sils and headed straight into the tournament, running out for the first game of the day against the host club.

It was a pleasure for the Coaches and the parents to watch the lads play and compete, as this new Age Grade is quite a step up. Both Sutton teams held their own in all matches and showed some excellent running lines, support play, tackling and team spirit.

We handled the new aspects of scrummaging, mauling and rucking really well, but, just like some other clubs, it is obvious that ongoing training is needed in these areas to fully exploit the different parts of the game. Once we dominate the ruck area especially, we have the speed and power out wide to really cut defenses to pieces and score tries.

All in all, a great day at Sils and a great first proper run out for the lads - who ended the day having won games and lost games. There were some great individual stand out performances, but it was pleasing to see the whole squad step up as one mighty Green Machine and all have smiles on their faces.
