The Ladies had their first league game on Sunday against Essington. With it been the start of the season and many players having not come back to Uni yet, we struggled for numbers. We took four Sutton Girls ( Charlie, Nicola, Georgia and Hannah) and two girls from Handsworth RFC (Hannah and Nicola).
Essington kindly lent us a few of their players so we could play a game of tens. The game was split into 20 minute thirds with the first two being a close call between the two teams. In the first half, Charlie made a break and scored a try just to the left of the posts, with Georgia converting it to make it 7-7.
In the 2nd 20 minutes Charlie made and excellent break from our own 22, avoiding many tackles, and scoring once again next to the posts. Unfortunately the conversion was missed. However not to be disheartened the girls ploughed on through the next ten minutes with everybody working hard and making some excellent tackles. The girls next points on the scoreboard came from a penalty that was kicked from straight in front of the posts by Georgia Copeland.
For the last 20 minutes Essington had fresh legs from their subs and it showed. Where our girls were getting tired they were speeding up.
This led to a 41-15 Win to Essington. Despite the defeat all of the girls had a fantastic time and look forward to our next fixture at home against Cannock on the 19th October.
