Victory sees Sutton Coldfield Women through to round 2 of the national cup

Sutton Coldfield Women continued their successful season this week with a 57-0 victory against Coventry Welsh in round 1 of the Junior cup.

Two tries in the the opening five minutes of play set Sutton up for another winning performance. Charlie Byrne opened up the scoring with the first backs play, quick ball from Sammi Allwood at a breakdown saw the centre crash through a gap in the defence to score. Con Byrne. Byrne then caught Coventry’s kick off, running from Sutton's half, Byrne managed to outpace the defence out wide to score in the corner.
Jessica Nally added to the first half tally, the hooker picked up the ball on the half way line before dummying the defence and running in for the try under the posts. Con Holly Wheeldon. Despite pressure from Coventry at kick off Sutton's defence held strong. Vicky Sullivan and Mollie Campbell making vital hits around the breakdown area. Eventually possession was returned to the home side, Fly half Alison Livermore capitalised on the opportunity breaking through tackles before finding Kerri-anne Melsom on the wing who battled past the last of the opposition to score.

At the end of the first half several conceded penalties gave Coventry and opportunity to get within Sutton's twenty two. However the teams defence who have nilled two teams already this season held strong. Coventry maul was turned over by Genna Pilling to regain possession. The resulting scrum saw another impressive drive by Sutton’s forward pack. Athena Jai picked up the ball from the base of the scrum, the number eight then demonstrated a spectacular individual effort with an unstoppable run down the blindside to score the final try of the half. Con Livermore.

The second half saw another dominant display by the home side. Sutton soon found themselves within the oppositions twenty-two where they were awarded a penalty. Nally was ready to capitalise adding a second try to her tally, picking from the base of a Sutton scrum before crashing over the line. The Wheeldon sisters combined to add the next, Holly Wheeldon with a clean take from Coventry's kick off before an evading run by debutant split the oppositions defence. the front row player then showed her skill as she managed to off-load to sister Tara who dived over the line. Con Livermore. Sutton added a further score through a brilliant individual by centre Natalie Hall. The ball was moved quickly out wide from the breakdown to find Hall who went on a blinding run dummying several defenders to score from her own half. Con Livermore. Byrne rounded off the scoreline, fly half Livermore finding Byrne out wide who completed her hat-trick after stepping through a gap in the defence to score. Con Livermore.

The victory sees Sutton Coldfield through to round 2 of the national cup which is to be played on the 17th December.

Players of the match went to Sammi Allwood for an amazing performance at scrum-half along with Charlie Byrne for a strong performance

Sutton’s next league game is away against Birmingham Exiles on 3rd December
