Lichfield Green Ladies 24pts v Sutton Ladies 0pts
National League, Championship 2 Midlands
Sutton Ladies made the short trip to Lichfield on Sunday for the return fixture, having comfortably beaten the Lichfield Greens team 34-15 at home in November.
Unlike the first match, this was not to be a walk in the park for Sutton. Lichfield capitalised on early pressure and a high penalty count to secure a first half bonus point. Two tries were scored following errors at the set piece, with the other two being scored following wide attack in broken field, making the half time score 24-0 to the home team.
Sutton refocused at half time, however, and went through the gears in the second half, dominating in the scrum, and forcing a sin bin to a Lichfield replacement following repeated high tackle infringements, but ultimately failing to break the deadlock. Lichfield had their own attacking opportunities in the second half, but player of the match for Sutton, the peerless Katie Gregory, captaining from fullback, ensured that the Green Wall in defence was not to be broken in the second half.
In the end, it was a scoreless second half, following a defiant and proud showing from Sutton. Whilst being a tough loss, it stands the team in good stead as we prepare for our last two matches against Moseley, and Worcester. The ladies had to play to a standard they have not encountered since the first match of the season against Worcester. Credit to Lichfield Greens on a superb performance. One must wonder how they are currently in the bottom half of the table when they are able to perform to such a high standard, as they did on Sunday.
Sutton host Moseley ladies on Sunday 20th for our final home match of the season.
