WOMEN’S NC1 WEST FIVE WAYS OLD EDS LADIES 0-55 SUTTON COLDFIELD LADIES 1ST XV

On Sunday the Sutton Coldfield Ladies 1st XV produced arguably one of their finest ever performances when they ventured over to Hopwood coming away with an emphatic 55-0 win against an in-form Five Ways side that had won their last five games.
On an absolute quagmire of a pitch, that only got the go-ahead from the referee an hour before kick off, Sutton scored 9 tries and 5 conversions in a try bonus point success that maintains their unbeaten record and consolidates their place at the top of the league table.
The tone for the afternoon was set after only 2 minutes when teenage centre Connie Bradshaw powered her way through the home defence to score under the posts and moments later fellow centre Katie Gregoryy touched down for her 4th try of the season after her fly kick through created the opportunity; both tries were converted by KerrieAnne Melsom and the lead was 14-0 with just 8 minutes gone.
The hosts defended resolutely as the half continued but the pressure eventually told after 31 minutes when captain Charlie Byrne reacted quickest to a breaking ball to go over for her 3rd try of the campaign; then, with half time approaching, a superb scrum half break by outstanding Cardiff University youngster Sophie Richards, thrown in to start at late notice, put wing Jada Bailey in for a well-worked score that Melsom converted to leave Sutton 26-0 ahead and almost out of sight at the break.
With a powerful bench at their disposal coaches Nathan Burchelll and George Ord were able to introduce former Worcester Valkyries players Jo Hart and Emma Harris at the interval with both debutants distinguishing themselves during a 2nd period that Sutton completely dominated playing some remarkable rugby considering the filthy conditions.
Kerrie-Anne Melsom, again with Sophie Richards doing the hard yards, got the ball rolling just 2 minutes after the restart with her 3rd try of the season, a score that secured the valuable bonus point in the process.
Influential hooker Tara Wheeldon then smashed though a beleaguered home defence on 64 minutes to score her 5th try of the season, a fitting reward for the impact both Tara and fellow ‘front five’ forwards Vicky Sullivan, Neve Tydeman, Charlie George and Emma Clueit were having on the game with their relentless carrying, tackling and offloading; particularly pleasing to see Emma Clueit restored to fitness after a prolonged spell out through injury. In addition, the back row of Candice Grayson, Liz Fletcher and Roisín McBrien were everywhere allowing those around them to flourish in an afternoon where skill sets were severely tested.
With remaining replacements Natalie Hall, Bella Timmins, Genna Pilling and fit again Holly Wheeldon all now on, all fine players in their own right, Sutton produced an outstanding final quarter that saw Jada Bailey go on to complete her hat-trick with wonderfully crafted tries after 67 and 72 minutes before Connie Bradshaw brought the curtain down with her 2nd try of the afternoon and her 11th of her debut season; Melsom and fly half Maria Crowfoot, who had run the show throughout, added 2nd half conversions leaving the final score at 55-0.
Superb all-round team display by the Sutton girls with many standout performers, in the end for their selfless displays Liz Fletcher was nominated ‘forward of the match’ with Katie Gregory, winning her 25th cap, taking the ‘back’ accolade.
Congratulations to Sophie Richards, Jo Hart and Emma Harris for impressive debuts and to former Worcester Valkyries star Jada Bailey who, with her latest treble, has now scored 10 tries in just 4 appearances. However, in the try scoring charts it’s Connie Bradshaw who now leads the way with 11 to her name closely followed by Jada Bailey and Roisin McBrien with 10 apiece.
Special thanks must go to all our supporters who came over to cheer the girls on, to our excellent match official and last, but not least, to Five Ways for being great hosts as always and we look forward to welcoming them for the return at the RSG in the New Year.
The 1st XV girls are ‘resting’ next week before Greyhound from Hereford are the visitors the week after. The 2nd XV are away to unbeaten league leaders Aston Old Edwardians next Sunday and all support would be most welcome as our development players face a daunting task.
