Sutton Coldfield 45 pts v Dudley Kingswinsford 10 pts National League 3 Midlands

Sutton's alternating home and away form continued last weekend with a convincing 45-10 home victory over old rivals and respected long standing opponents Dudley Kingswinsford, who are currently in the midst of a rebuilding exercise after they lost 22 player from their senior squad two seasons ago, whilst playing in National League 2 and as a result they were relegated from National League 2 last season and now struggling in National League 3 this season. the Black Country side will surely bounce back and recover their former formidable reputation but last weekend it was the West Midlands side, who rose to the occasion and had the upper hand producing some of their best rugby of the season so far, scoring 7 tries and 5 conversions whilst restricting their struggling opponents to just two consolation tries.

Sutton kicked off against a fluctuating wind and applied early pressure in their opponents 22 but without reward and after 15 minutes Dudley K broke out to create an overlap on the left wing allowing winger Nick Adams to score in the corner for a 5-0 lead against the run of play. However Sutton continued to press forward and 5 minutes later skipper Fraser Tait made a break in midfield to send outside centre Tom McNamee racing into the D-K 22. The centre delivered a perfect pass into the hands of right wing Nathan Burchell, who raced home for an equalising try, which was converted by centre Alex White to give Sutton a 7-5 lead midway through the first half. Following the restart, sustained Sutton pressure kept play in the D-K half and a break by centre Alex White led to a second try for winger Nathan Burchell, who scored to the left of the posts. Alex White added the conversion to stretch Sutton's lead to 14-5 after 24 minutes of play and the Sutton pressure continued from the restart with an outstanding break by 2nd row Adam Bennett, who found a gap in midfield and raced 35 metres to the D-K posts. The brave run was stopped short of the line but dubious play by the visitors defenders resulted in a yellow card and a penalty for Sutton. Quick thinking Fraser Tait took a quick tap from in front of the posts to punish D-K further with a try and Alex White added the conversion to extend Sutton's lead to 21-5, ten minutes before the break. From the kick off the visitors left wing made a dramatic 50 metre break but fullback Ben Morgan covered across and helped by Sutton's try scorer Nathan Burchell, who raced back to complete a try saving tackle, Sutton cleared the danger and then with 2 minutes left to play Fraser Tait took the ball on from a lineout and raced in for Sutton's bonus point try to complete a great half for the Sutton side in front their approving first team predecessors from a decade ago, who had just completed a veteran's game.

With Sutton leading 26-5, Dudley K made a determined start to the second half and their efforts were rewarded with a second try for winger Nick Adams, who intercepted a lazy Sutton pass on the D-K 10 metre line and the left wing raced 40 metres into the corner for a well taken try to close to 26-10 (45 mins) but Sutton again stepped up their game and following a confusing incident in which Sutton were denied a try but then went on to score a try, the home side dominated play in the final period scoring a total of three tries in the second half.

The confusing incident came midway through the second half with the score on 26-10 when a Sutton attack into the right corner produced a driving maul but the maul broke up and went to ground leaving a small number of players from both sides embroiled in a tussle on the floor. However Sutton were able to regain the ball and they swept play wide to the right but just as they crossed for a try the referee stopped play to deal with the ruckus and Sutton were denied a certain score. However, when play was restarted with a tap penalty from a free kick to Sutton by the posts the ball was spun out to the right wing where prop Sean Harrison was lurking and the multi-mobile prop ambled over in the corner for well executed try. Centre Alex White added an inch perfect conversion from the right touchline to extend Sutton's lead to 33-10 with 20 minutes to play.

When play restarted fly half Josh Rolls, who had another excellent game as play maker, read the play perfectly when the visitors tried to set up an attack down their right wing. The wily fly half swooped to snap up an interception on the halfway line and he raced down the left wing to score in the corner stretching Sutton's lead to 38-10 with 18 minutes to play. With a convincing lead Sutton continued to play with conviction and a solid scrum on the halfway line followed by a break from fly half Josh Rolls in midfield set up a well deserved first try for centre Tom McNamee, to cap his best game of the season and with Alex White converting 2 of the 3 second half tries, Sutton completed a deserved 45-10 victory.

Whilst their once illustrious visitors are struggling to reinvent themselves, Sutton's own rebuilding operation is showing good signs of recovery with 20 year old Ben Morgan, a talented fly half by choice and instinct but the developing player is adjusting well to the senior game and continues to impress at fullback and with Tom McNamee, who joined Sutton this summer from Aston Old Ed's has so far played on the wing and fullback but last weekend he filled a vacancy at centre and had his best game to date providing strong runs through the midfield leading to an assist with a scoring pass to winger Nathan Burchell and to cap it all he scored his first try for the senior side, all of which bodes well for the future and with talented players like Tom Harris, Andy Tovey and Ian Miller waiting in the wings, plus the new look Sutton pack looking more settled with each game, the forth coming fixtures should hold no fear for the improving Sutton National 3 side.

This weekend Sutton travel up the M6 in the hope of carrying their excellent home form away to Sandbach, who sit 7th in the league, one place above Sutton but with a game in hand over the other teams in the league due to their game against Hinckley being postponed earlier in the season. KO 3pm.
