Unfortunately the Yardley club is suffering from a lack of players at present, so as a result 4 Sutton players played for the home team at various stages of the afternoon. However for his unstinting effort Sutton's Brandon Jones received Yardley's man of the match award despite playing in a fancy dress bandage for a slight footballer's cut to his head!! For Sutton Dynamic Dom Morpeth lit up the spectacle with some coruscating runs especially in a very one sided first half which lead to a half tome score of Yardley 0 Saxons 24.Tries from Clarke, his sleight of hand fooling everyone including I suspect himself and McEvoy who relished the wide open spaces to net a collection of very similar tries. There were also the usual stoppages to injuries to Brown and Foulsham!!!!
The procession of players on and off the pitch continued in the second half in which the Saxons continued to power in the tries against a team including, Sutton's Jones, King and Duckworth, that didn't give up and battled manfully to the end. Tries from Marshall, Shaw, McEvoy, Sandford et al plus a first first half try in ages for J Clarke which I'd forgotten about!! kept the score board tattling around. The home team's endeavours were awarded with a well created try in the corner from Jones, a fine conversion from wide out meant a well deserved goal.
The final score of 55-7 was largely immaterial when compared to the fact that without the willingness of 4 Sutton players to play for the opposition and Chairman Jim Haywood to referee would have meant a futile journey. This is the spirit of the game of rugby a fact that may have been lost on a few people when winning is not the be all and end all!!!
