Two in a row!

Sutton welcomed Birmingham Uni. Engineers to Walmley Road and recorded a win after twice turning over deficits of 12 and 10 points! After last week's false summer of a start Sutton started sluggishly to say the least and quickly found themselves 12 points in arrears.Without having to do too much the Engineers strode through a huge gap in the home defence to score and from a well worked lineout they added another. Gradually through some powerful runs from Dom Morphett, Vaughan Brown and skipper Steve Marshall, the home team gained a foothold in the Engineers half. By stint of simple picking and going in pairs or threes , Sutton gained ground. With territory being gained and held something had to give and eventually it did. After concerted pressure in the Engineers 22 and powerful drives from Morphett and Chris Duckworth(Duckling) larger than life ex captain James Hegarty crashed over for a well deserved try. Duckling drilled the conversion at and onto the post and the ball somewhat reluctantly bobbled over for the extras. 12-7 and it was game on.
The game was turning as Sutton gained some ball and put it through the hands with Alex Shaw and returnee Duncan Carr( having wisely given up the abuse and hassle inherent in the round ball game!) to the fore. However it was the Engineers who scored again as the clock ticked into the red at the end of the first half.
The second half commenced with the Engineers holding a 17-7 lead but a rejuvenated Sutton crunched the away team's scrum and disrupted their lineout as the Engineers lost much of their cohesion. The pressure evetually told as the final destructive scrum went he way of Sutton and front row forward Quentin Doireau touched down on the end of a scrambled Duckling kick through a crowd of players. With a successful conversion the home team hit back to narrow the deficit to just 3 points. The force was with Sutton now and the behemoth that is Hegarty took no prisoners as the Engineers wilted up front. Powerful and destructive running from Rab Cooper, Aaron Byrne, Doireau and Marshall took the fight to the Engineers and it was no real surprise as Sutton hit the front through a close range Marshall try. A missed conversion but a narrow 2 point lead was to be defended at all costs. In all truth the Engineers didn't threaten the green line again as they lost all semblance of composure. To run salt into their wounds Sutton scored again as Duckling chased down a prod ahead just beating the defender to the ball before touching own under the sticks and converting his own try. 26-17 and the comeback was complete.
All in all a satisfactory afternoon an omportant win for a team that needs to know how to win in different ways.
