Curious decisions cost Sutton away win

The Derbyshire mist finally lifted enough to see the opposite touchline, as the two teams took to the field. From the start Derby were on the front foot pressuring the Sutton pack inside their own 22, with five minutes on the clock the visiting defenses were breached by the No.8 from the back of the scrum.
This shocked Sutton into action and they gradually pulled themselves into the contest, working hard against a strong and determined home side.
The backs, finally let loose, run in three tries after some dogged work from the pack helped to set a somewhat creaky platform with Derby constantly probing for weaknesses at the breakdown. The home sides persistence paid off with alarming effect, counter rucking and out scrummaging Sutton's normally sound set pieces.
A strange decision to yellow card Sutton's blindside flanker after what seemed like a perfectly executed tackle and rip gave Derby the advantage with ten minutes left of the first period. Good pressure and strong defense ensured that the score remained 5-17 to the visitors at he half time whistle.
Although leading, Sutton were never allowed to settle with the ball, and with the referee deeming it necessary to blow up for every imaginary infringement against the away side Derby were able to keep their collective thumb on the Sutton head. A good piece of work inside Sutton's 22 saw the visitors gain ground rapidly crossing the half way line and with a kick over the top created the space for a fourth try to be scored ten minutes into the second period.
Now was the time for a series of refereeing decisions that turned a very enjoyable, competitive game between two evenly match sides into a procession of penalties to the home side.
Derby capitalised with some good play from the back of the scrum crossing the line three times bringing the score to 20-22 with 10 minutes left. The pressure was now on the away side, this being evident in the increasingly poor decision making, handing the ball back to Derby with uncharacteristic frequency.
The final nail was another yellow card for the Sutton captain who was penalised when questioning a penalty decision for spinning their own scrum through 90 degrees, this meant that the visitors were one man down for the remainder of the contest.
This finally paid dividends for the home side with 2 minutes left on the clock, their No.8 crossing the line again in the corner from the back of another five metre scrum, leaving no time for Sutton to reply. The final whistle sounded with the score 25-22 to the home side.
Derby were fantastic in their approach of executing their game plan, stifling the powerful Sutton pack and not allowing them to get into their usual rhythm, this in turn nullified the backs ability to run the ball freely.
Next week we travel to Ashby De La Zouch.
