Well done parents and players

It was under testing conditions that the Mighty U8’s attended their first tournament of the 2018/19 season. It was not made any easier by the lack of preparation (and shelter) by their main coach, and the stretched-out nature of the fixtures, suggesting extended periods of time off the pitch and in the warmth of the clubhouse
However, it was with high spirits and sodden kit that they entered into their first match against an understrength Lichfield A so fielding a 1st V (some of their players were yet to turn up) that Sutton opened their account. With some mazy running and at times ludicrous dummies, Sutton managed to slightly warm their spirits.
After a 30-minute break Sutton were to grace the field once more against a full capacity Stourbridge VI. With our first match under our belts, but the rain still pouring, the lads started to develop their passing game with a combination of offloads from the tackles, to purposeful passages of play, where everyone got involved in attacking moves.
The next break in play brought about some team bonding into the woods near the pitches, but all players returned ready for their 3rd match. The Bear Grylls team building into the “Wilderness” filled the players with an eager eye for tagging and the defensive side of their game much improved, to the detriment of the travelling team from Mellish RFC.
Due to the inclement weather, a decision was made to abandon the final round of fixtures, so Sutton’s next match was against the second Stourbridge VI. This was also the last match of the U8 age group and proved to be a veritable feast of flowing rugby for the hardiest of supporting crowd! The ref opted for an unusual cumulative points system, which suited Sutton’s style of play and the newest and youngest of the Sutton Team, who hadn’t stopped smiling all day, finished the tournament with his first try.
Although the lads (and supporters) were drenched to their skins and buoyed by the warm glow of sugary products, their spirits were never dampened. All are now looking forward to gracing the field together and continuing to strengthen their bond as a team.
Well done all,
